Dmitry Kalinin, was born in Moscow in 1978. He began to play the balalaika at the age of 7 and now he is one of the most recognized professional balalaika performers in Russia.

He has won the most prestigious All-Russian and International competitions, such as "North Cup" ("Kubok Severa", Cherepovets, 2004) and VI-th "V. Andreev" (Tver, 2001) and gained enthusiastic response from the audience. Dmitry graduated from the Gnessins Russian Academy of Music in 2003, where he as well completed post-graduate course under the guidance of Professor V. Boldyrev (honored artist of Russia). In 1997 Dmitry Kalinin was invited as soloist to the Academic Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments of the Russian State TV and Radio Broadcasting Company (Chief-conductor – People’s artist of the USSR N. Nekrasov).

Accompanied by this glorified orchestra he has recorded a number of compositions of various genres and forms for Russian radio and TV channel "Culture" written by A.Varlamov, N. Budashkin, A. Shalov, A. Danilov. His interpretation of emotional and hard Marchakovsky’s recital was the revelation. Dmitry often performes as a soloist with Ossipov Balalaika Orchestra, the folk orchestra "Moscow", Orchestra of the Gnessin academy and other orchestras. He has collaborated with many conductors such as V. Fedoseev, S. Skripka, P. Sorokin.

Mr. Kalinin has performed in the best concert halls in Russia and abroad, including the Bolshoi Theatre, the Great Hall of the Moscow Conservatory, Tchaikovsky Concert Hall, Concert Hall "Russia"and the Column Hall of the House of Unions in Moscow; Santory-Hall (Tokyo) and "Minato mirai" (Yokohama) and others…

His balalaika sounds in more then 20 film soundtracks: "The Siberian barber" (by N. Mikhalkov),"The Tender Age" (by S. Solovyev), "New Bremen Musicians" (by G. Gladkov) ,"Under the Polar Star" (by M. Voronkov), "The Heated Saturday" (by A. Mitta), "Again It Is Necessary To Live" (by V. Panin), "Collective Farm" (by M. Voronkov), "Impudent" (by A. Surikova), "Doctor Zhivago" (by A. Proshkin). Some of his last works - participation in record of E. Artemyev`s opera "Raskolnikov " (by F. Dostoevsky) and D. Shostakovich's opera "Balda" for Deutsche Grammophon. Dmitry Kalinin took part in projects of Russian bards T. Shaov, Gr. Gladkov and I. Rosa. He made recordings for radio-performances, theatrical Plays and TV programs. Dmitry gives masters-classes in different regions of Russia. From 2001 Dmitry Kalinin works together with a winner of international competitions, pianist F. Subbotin (ensemble "Russian Duo").

Young musicians perfectly perform Russian and foreign classics, arrangements of Russian folk songs, jazz and original contemporary music. They also plays Kalinin's own compositions. Among composers working with them there are: V. Biktashev, S. Novikova-Borodina, S. Levin, A. Sokolov, A. Milovidov and others.

Mr. Kalinin successfully performed in different concert halls of Germany, Hungary, Italy, Japan, Turkey, Montenegro, Sweden.

Dmitry promotes original music for balalaika and writes his own music. Now his repertoire are available – 2 albums were published in 2004 – “From the repertoire of Dmitry Kalinin and Filipp Subbotin”. They were presented at the recital in the Gnessins Academy Hall 13 November 2004.

Since December, 2005 maestro Kalinin - a professor of balalaika of State Musical Institute by M. Ippolitov-Ivanov.

Since September, 2007 Dmitry Kalinin - a chief-conductor of the Orchestra of Russian Folk Instruments of State Musical Institute by M. Ippolitov-Ivanov.

At 2014 he graduated from Moscow P. I. Tchaikovsky Conservatory. Opera and Symphony Conducting class by Honored Artist of Russia, Professor Vladimir Ponkin. Maestro's oficcial website
